Papa Emorimor Arrives in Johannesburg for Landmark SADC Cultural Engagements

The cultural leader of the Iteso people, His Royal Highness Papa Emorimor Paul Sande Emolot Etomeileng III, has safely arrived in Johannesburg, South Africa, ahead of a series of high-profile cultural engagements across the Southern African Development Community (SADC) region.

The Emorimor received a warm and dignified reception upon landing, with the Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) providing an official escort to his hotel. The warm welcome underscored the respect accorded to traditional leaders and the recognition of the Emorimor’s growing stature as a cultural figure of continental importance.

Papa Emorimor’s visit comes at the special invitation of His Majesty King Mswati III of the Kingdom of Eswatini and His Majesty King Misuzulu kaZwelithini of the Zulu Kingdom. Over the coming days, he is scheduled to participate in key traditional ceremonies and cultural diplomacy meetings in both countries.

The engagements are expected to place a spotlight on the role of cultural institutions in strengthening African unity and heritage. Ambassador David Emoot, the SADC Ambassador for the Iteso Cultural Union, emphasized the significance of the visit in a statement:

The Iteso, spread across Uganda and parts of Kenya, have long prided themselves on cultural resilience and their commitment to heritage preservation. Papa Emorimor, who ascended as the spiritual and cultural head of the Iteso, has increasingly become a unifying figure beyond his community, reaching out to fellow custodians of tradition across the continent.

In recent years, his leadership has focused on cultural diplomacy – positioning traditional institutions as vital players in regional cooperation, peacebuilding, and the preservation of African values in the face of globalization.
