Soroti, Uganda — August 19, 2025
The Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) and the Iteso Cultural Union (ICU) have today opened a high-level dialogue to combine efforts in protecting and rehabilitating the natural environment across Teso.
Led by Brig. Gen. David Gonyi, Chief of Staff of the UPDF Air Force, the military delegation is exploring partnership frameworks with ICU to support tree-growing, wetland restoration, anti-charcoal initiatives, and community sensitisation.
In attendance are His Royal Highness Papa Emorimor Paul Sande Emolot, the ICU Prime Minister Andrew Ocole, and several ministers and councillors of the cultural union.
Why this matters
- Community-first conservation: Aligns cultural leadership with national environmental action.
- Stronger coordination: Leverages UPDF logistics and ICU’s community networks for impact.
- Sustainable livelihoods: Focus on restoration that supports households and youth employment.
